Come with an Idea, Leave with a Story

Once we have established a relationship with an author, we offer something quite unique in publishing – our Writer’s Room. It works like this…

At Inkubator, we have a lot of very experienced writing talent – both in-house and freelance. When an author pitches us a new idea for a book, one or two of our team will get on a zoom and help to explore the idea, examine different ways it might develop, maybe even try to set down a basic structure.

This is no way prescriptive, we just throw a bunch of ideas at the author and they take whatever is useful and fits with their vision of the story.

Then the author works on a more detailed outline and we repeat the process one more time. Hopefully, by then, we’ll have the basic shape of a workable story and the author will have saved a lot of time by identifying and eliminating structural problems and plot dead ends at this early stage.

This approach is widely used in writing for TV and is the principal means by which writers polish their skills to the point where they are ready to have a show of their own. All that’s required of you is an open and receptive attitude and a willingness to embrace good ideas no matter where they come from.

Through this process, we can help you hone your writing skills, moving them up to the next level. And it won’t cost you a penny – it’s our way of saying we believe in you and we think this is a relationship that’s worth some investment.

Fundamental questions we will address in the Writers Room might include –

  • What is your main story? Does it constantly move forward? Does it have enough twists and turns? Is it structurally sound?
  • What are your subplots? Do they work in their own right?
  • Do the main story and the subplots collide and affect each other in surprising ways?
  • Who is your protagonist and what do they want? What obstacles do they meet on the way? What is at stake for them? Do they feel fully formed, a real person with an inner life?
  • Is your antagonist formidable? Original?
